Take One

I used my MacBook Pro to record live music for the first time this week, recording three vocalists and a guitar on stage at my church.

I decided to use Garage Band for these first experiments to help me get used to the interface and the nuances of Logic-based recording. Setup was very easy, since the program instantly recognized my m-audio ProFire 610 interface – all I had to do was properly define and assign each of the four channels.  Renamed each track for easy reference later, adjusted the input levels on each line and I was ready to go.

I recorded three songs over seventeen minutes, making adjustments in the input level as necessary (though I’m not certain it really was all that necessary to make these adjustments, since these sorts of things can be done after the fact as long as you have recorded adequate signal to begin with).  Now I’ve got a scratch track to play with, choosing from various pre-defined effects to craft the sound as I like.

It’s not much, but it is a start.
